Class X Physics Chapter-8.

sound
Situations where reflection of sound is utilised.
Bats, dolphins etc. produce ultrasonic waves. These waves hit at objects on their path, get reflected and are received by their ears. This helps them to travel avoiding hindrances and also to find their prey.
Sonar: Sonar is used to measure the depth of oceans and to detect the shoal of fish. High frequency ultrasonic sound is used in its working. If `v' is the velocity of the sound waves and `t' is the time taken by the sound to travel from the source and come back after reflection from the object,
Radar: Police uses radar to find out the speed of vehicles plying on roads. In this,  microwaves are used instead of sound waves. The range of their frequency lies between the frequency of light wavesand radiowaves. The principle of working is the same as that of sonar. Waves travel from the source towards the target and come back within a particular interval of time. The time is measured using sensitive instruments. Using the data, the distance of the object from the source can be calculated.

Class VI Physics Chapter 2. കണ്ണാടി നന്നായാല്‍(If the Mirror is Fine)

Reflection of light
A rubber ball comes back when it is
thrown on the ground. Similarly, light rays
that fall on a surface return back. This process
is called reflection. The ray of light that falls on an object is termed as “the incident ray” and the ray of light that comes back is termed “the reflected ray”. Objects which are opaque and have smooth surfaces reflect light much better and in a regular manner.
Rough surfaces reflect light in an irregular manner.

Class VIII Chapter 10. (Force)

To keep in mind Newton’s first law of motion
When the ball moves down the inclined plane, the force acting on it  is a component of the gravitational force. This unbalanced force acts parallel to the surface of the inclined plane. When the ball reaches the horizontal plane, the force that opposes the motion of the ball is the force of friction between the ball and the plane surface. If the plane surface is frictionless, the ball continues its motion indefinitely. This is because there is no unbalanced external   force acting on the ball to stop it.
Newton’s First law of motion: Every body continues in its state of rest or of uniform motion along a straight line until it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force.
Second law of Motion: The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the unbalanced external force acting on the body and it takes place in the direction of the force.
Third law of motion: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Examples where action and reaction are applied.
  • When a shot is fired from a gun, the gun recoils.
The shot moves forward due to the force exerted by the gun (action) on it. At the same time the shot exerts an equal amount of force in the opposite direction (reaction). As a result the gun moves back which is known as the recoil of the gun. The recoil velocity of the gun is very small because its mass is very large when compared with the mass of the shot.
  • When a person jumps from a boat, the boat moves back.
When a person jumps, he exerts a force on the boat (action). At the same time the boat exerts an equal force on him in the opposite direction (reaction). It is due to this reaction that the person reaches the shore. The boat moves back due to the force exerted by the person on it.
  • When air is released from an inflated balloon, the balloon moves in a direction opposite to the air current.
The balloon exerts a force on the air inside it. As a result the air is pushed out from the balloon. At the same time the air exerts an equal force on the balloon in the opposite direction. As a result the balloon flies off in a direction opposite to that of air current.
  • Propulsion of rockets.
When a rocket is fired, gases at very high pressure are produced in the combustion chamber due to the burning of the fuel. The gases are forced out through the nozzle. This is the action. The jet of gas, in turn, exerts an equal force on the rocket in the opposite direction. Due to this reaction the rocket is propelled.
  • The movement of a swimmer who swims in a river.
During swimming the person who swims pushes back the water with his hands and legs (action). At the same time the person is being pushed forward by the water (reaction).
  • The book on a table.
When a book is placed on a table, the weight of the book acts on the table downwards. This forms the action. The force exerted by the table on the book upwards is the reaction. Since both these forces are equal and opposite in direction the book rests on the table.
